Big Sur

The famous Bixby Creek Bridge at Big Sur.

Big Sur is located not far south of the wonderfully charming cities of Monterey and Carmel - which is also where the Netflix series "Big Little Lies" takes place. If you've watched the show, you'll know that this is a beautiful and affluent area of California.

What makes this place unique is that you are afforded gorgeous mountain views of the Los Padres National Forest where it meets along the California coastline. It has developed a reputation for being one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. The forest stretches out to meet the sea, and waterfalls plunge into the sand before the feet of the ocean.

Because of the beauty and affluence of the general area, lodging in Big Sur will run you about $300/night for moderate accommodations. We stayed at a hotel in Monterey and drove down to Big Sur. You should check AirBnB rentals in nearby Carmel and Monterey as well.

McWay Falls. Ever seen a waterfall that drops right onto the beach and flows into the ocean?

I lingered here a long time, but it's hard to want to pull away from the magnificence of this coast line.

Cannery Row in Monterey is absolutely charming!

In the daytime, this area is bustling with tourists, and that's not a bad thing. It has heavy foot traffic and plenty of adorable shops.

One of the most notable literary figures has been laid down in copper at Cannery Row. At the top, John Steinbeck anchoring down the monument. Have you read East of Eden, Grapes of Wrath or Mice of Men?

A very cozy restaurant in Big Sur, located in a cabin-turned-diner. Highly recommended. Visit Deetjen's Big Sur Inn and Restaurant.
